Make a date to stop by the Maryland Institute College of
Art on the evening of July 22nd (7:00-9:00pm) to hear Bill
Schneidereith give a brief history on the evolution of Baltimore’s
Printing Industry. From the early days of setting type by
hand to the fast paced transfer of electronic files around
the world in an instant you’ll be amazed with how far
printing has progressed. Presented by SHAG-the Society for
History and Graphics. Schneidereith & Sons was a fixture
in the Baltimore printing industry for over 150 years. Attendees
are encouraged to bring artifacts and images related to Baltimore's
printing industry. The Maryland Institute College of Art
is located at 1401 Mount Royal Avenue in Baltimore. The talk
will be held in the Bunting Center, Room 410.
Don't
Be Surprised by An OSHA Inspection
As a result
of OSHA's National Emphasis Program (NEP) for the prevention
of amputations, surprise inspections by compliance officers
are becoming more common. Typically these visits are random,
and are conducted by inspectors who may not be experts
in printing. OSHA is not required to grant extra time for
inspections, and in most cases, will not. The inspector
will begin with a tour of the plant, and will no doubt
pay special attention to the guillotine cutters if applicable.
Along with printing presses, guillotine cutters and three-knife
trimmers are highly targeted equipment under the NEP program. "Every
OSHA inspection will result in a request to see paperwork...and
missing paperwork can easily turn into a citation," says
Rick Hartwig, Environmental, Health &
Safety manager for Printing Industries of America. That's
why it is essential to have a well-established and documented
series of written safety programs and site-specific procedures
in place. Crucial documents to have include lockout/tagout
procedures, OSHA 300 logs, training programs, and Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE) assessment requirements.
If you need help preparing for an OSHA
inspection, be sure to consult the"What
You Need to Know for Safe Equipment Operation" guide. It contains a lockout/tagout
checklist for many types of equipment. The Guide was mailed
to all PGAMA members earlier this year. Call the office if
you need a(nother) copy-410-319-0900. And if you do receive
a citation, don't despair. Remember that through your PGAMA
membership you have experts like Rick Hartwig in your corner,
who can help you develop a plan of action to reduce the fines
through abatement efforts and negotiation
with OSHA.

HP
Stops Promotion of MarketSplash
Earlier this year Hewlett-Packard caused a great protest
among printing industry customers by debuting MarketSplash.
This online marketing design service gave the clear
impression that it was selling HP digital output direct to
end users, hence cutting the printers out of the loop. HP
has since announced that it will stop advertising the service
and modify their website, pointing to printers who use HP
equipment instead.
