New Webinar to Focus on Form 300A

OSHA determines whom they will inspect by collecting injury and illness data (Form 300A), and companies with the highest injury
and illness rates are at risk of being inspected. Currently, OSHA has been reviewing the accuracy of Injury and Illness logs because they believe this data is underreported, and they are questioning the validity of the downward trend in injuries and illnesses.
Tune in to the OSHA Recordkeeping Webinar on March 3rd from Noon-1:00pm to make sure your Illness & Injury records are correct so you can avoid an inspection.

During this one-hour broadcast you will learn:
• How to determine if an injury or illness is OSHA recordable
• What on-site records need to be kept for each injury or illness
• How medical opinions affect OSHA recordkeeping
• Differences between OSHA recordkeeping and workers’ compensation
• How to determine your DART rate
• How to fill out the three OSHA recordkeeping forms
• What OSHA will ask for during an inspection
• How to look for trends that will cause OSHA flags

Led by Mark Flannery, the director of environmental affairs at PINE and an authorized outreach trainer through OSHA. Cost is $55 per connection, per session for PGAMA members $110 for non-members. To register call PGAMA, 410-319-0900/877-319-0906 or sign up online at www.pgama.com.

More Proof that Direct Mail Works

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal offered more proof that direct mail works. The article was about firms who used ONLY the Internet in their marketing and found their efforts unsuccessful. The story focused on a corporate gift firm that had a $20,000 budget for direct mail and decided to rely solely on e-marketing and social media. The result was a 25% drop in sales. That drop, however, was corrected when the company went back to using print. Also featured in the article was the story of a real estate firm that decided to stick with its monthly mailings "since it's too easy to delete emails as junk." The moral of the story is that while a website is great for taking orders, it's lousy as a shopping venue. Print on the other hand, whether as a mail piece, an ad, or a catalog, is read by its audience and drives consumers to the website ready to buy what they've read about.

401(k) Updates

Two big developments regarding 401(k) plans--The Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) has issued final regulations for plans with fewer than 100 participants. Amounts withheld from a participant's wages will be deemed timely if deposited into the 401k plan no later than the seventh business day. In other 401(k) news, the Supreme Court last month refused to authorize workers to sue their employers regarding high fees charged by mutual funds offered by their employers. This is good news for employers who often are not provided good information regarding fees.

PGAMA's Printers' 401K Plan offers funds with very competitive fees that outperform their peers. When was the last time you reviewed your plan to evaluate the effectiveness, benefits, value and cost? If you have an existing 401(k), the Printers 401(k) can help you to update its worth by:

  • Minimizing investment fiduciary liability
  • Increasing the quality of your investments
  • Reducing plan expenses
  • Boosting plan participation
  • Improving plan deferral rates

For more information about a 401(k) plans, regulations, or a plan review, contact John Moynihan or Joe Trybula at Diversified Financial, 800-307-0376.

Color of the Year

Attention designers: Pantone has named PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise as the Color of the Year for 2010. According to Pantone, turquoise is "...an inviting, luminous hue that combines the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green. Turquoise inspires thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a comforting escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of well being."

In many cultures, turquoise is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. From a marketing perspective, its helpful to know that turquoise is a color that most people respond to positively. It is universally flattering, and has appeal for both men and women. With both warm and cool undertones, the shade pairs nicely with all other colors in the spectrum; adding a splash of excitement to neutrals and browns, complementing reds and pinks, creating a classic maritime look with deep blues, and enlivening greens. It is is especially trend-setting when paired with yellow-greens.

Web2Print Nexus?

Printers offering Web2Print solutions, take note: In 2008 the Internet sales landscape changed when the State of New York stipulated that online companies (Amazon, etc.) with sales above a specific threshold had nexus and must collect New York sales tax on purchases by New Yorkers. Since then, California, Colorado, Mississippi, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Virginia have proposed similar laws. The state where you do business could be next! Yes, there is a big fight over the constitutionality of this issue, but for printers who are now utilizing W2Print solutions, this situation is well worth watching since it could be a potential tax trap. PGAMA will keep you informed as developments arise.

Less than one year after Baltimore based Barton Cotton was rescued from Chapter 7 bankruptcy by its new owner, Jim Moore, the fundraising, affinity marketing and religious product firm has staged an exceptional comeback and is pleased to announce an upcoming move. Affirming his confidence and commitment to Barton Cotton's long-term stability and growth, Mr. Moore recently signed a 10-year lease for office, production and warehouse space at 3000 Waterview Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, which will soon become the new corporate headquarters of Barton Cotton and its fundraising division, Edge Direct.
